PRIORLEASE / U.S. + CANADA BUYERS
Off-lease and certified pre-owned describe different things.
Off-lease refers to previous use. Certified pre-owned refers to a certification program. Neither label replaces a VIN-specific history review, written warranty terms or an independent inspection.
What evidence supports each claim?
For off-lease history, ask for the vehicle's source and previous-use records. For certification, ask for the program name, certification documents, inspection findings and the organization responsible for the warranty. Dealer-created certification and manufacturer programs can have different terms.
How do you compare the warranty?
Compare covered systems, duration, mileage limits, exclusions, deductibles and who authorizes repairs. Ask whether coverage transfers and whether it applies where you plan to register and use the vehicle. A cross-border buyer should not assume U.S. warranty support automatically applies in Canada.
When might a certification premium be worthwhile?
Compare the incremental price with the actual coverage and your expected ownership needs. A documented inspection and warranty may be valuable, but the decision depends on exclusions and the car's condition. Paying more for a label without understanding the contract does not establish protection.
- Obtain both itemized purchase totals.
- Read coverage documents before discussing monthly payments.
- Arrange your own inspection where the seller permits it.
